Taylor's Birth Story

Well it only took me 5 months to have the time to sit and write this all out but I got it done!  Here's the saga of how our little Lucky Star came into our lives!

Tuesday October 26, 2010 I went to my regularly scheduled doctors appointment at 4pm.  I was 40 weeks and 4 days pregnant and my doctor said that there were no signs of Taylor coming anytime soon so she scheduled an induction for Saturday the 30th.  I left the appointment sad and for the 1st time disappointed that Taylor had not arrived yet.  I came home and had dinner with Gus and by 10 pm I was starving again so I ate dinner for the 2nd time (this was the first time I was actually starving during my pregnancy).  After a few tears of sadness that I was going to have to be induced we went to bed unbeknownst to us that it was our last night as a family of two.
Around 12:30 am I awoke with a funny feeling that something was going to happen, I rushed to the bathroom and my water broke!  I woke Gus up and we got ourselves out the door with a quick stop at Del Taco for a 3rd dinner on the way to the hospital.  We arrived at 2:15am and we were admitted to Labor and Delivery.  I was dilated to a 3 and the nurse was shocked that I had not felt one pain!  Around 3:30 am we were moved to our room and Grandpa and Grandma arrived to wait out the night with us.  I was started on Pitocin so my contractions became more and more apparent and Grandma Nicky arrived to wait the day with us as well.  At 7:45 am I got my epidural and it only worked on my right side, we had to have the anesthesiologist come back and reposition it so it would be in the proper place to numb me on both sides.  As we watched as my contractions got stronger and I laid my head back to get some rest.  The midwife told Gus that it would be about 6 hours or more so he laid down for a nap too.
This is where the timing gets fuzzy for me, the following events happened between 9:30am and 10:30 am but they felt like 10 minutes in my mind.  The midwife became concerned that Taylor was in distress because on the monitors his heart rate was slowing with each contraction.  They switched me to an internal monitor so they could get a more accurate reading of his heart rate.  At this time I was dilated to a 5, so we had a ways to go!  They turned up the volume on his heartbeat so we could hear it very loudly in the room.  With each contraction I heard the beeping slow and I started to panic a bit.  I asked Gus for his Ipod to listen to something other than his heart slowing so I could stay calm.  As tears streamed down my face and I listened to the Black Eyed Peas (I had to have something… anything that wasn’t sappy that would make me cry) mom came over and prayed for Taylor and me.  After seeing his heart rate drop below the chart for the third time mom went out to speak with the midwife because she was very concerned that with every contraction the beeping became slower and slower and then stopped and we all knew what that meant.  The midwife was watching the monitors as well and my mom told her that she needed to move NOW and I was all right with doing whatever needed to be done even if it was a C-Section to keep Taylor safe.
The midwife came in with 2 nurses and I knew it was getting bad because this was the 1st time more than 1 person was coming in to see me.  They tried to re-hydrate me and when that didn’t work they gave me oxygen and then flipped me to my left side, then very quickly to my right because that only made it worse.  They gave me a shot in my arm to help slow my contractions which didn’t work and they told everyone but Gus to leave the room.  The surgeon came in, looked over the charts and very quickly said they had to get him out right away.  She called the operating room as they slammed the sides up on my bed and ran me out of the room.  It felt like I was on a medical drama on TV as they ran me down the hall and I saw different faces appear above my bed as they ran.  I heard them tell Gus to follow us and they wheeled me into a white room.  Within seconds the room filled with people gowning up and I was frantically looking left and right for Gus.  As they were prepping me I was trying to get a hold of the situation mentally and I am almost positive I saw them start to cut me open and then a sheet went over my head and there were 2 doctors in my face talking to me, then they put me under general anesthesia and I was out.  It all happened so fast that they wouldn’t let Gus in the operating room because there was no time to get him changed and six minutes later the midwife came out to tell everyone that the baby was OK.  He had been completely entangled in the cord and it was wrapped around his neck 2 times and every time I contracted his heart stopped.  She said his heart rate was around 7, and the doctor said "I've never seen it get that low."  Taylor arrived safe and sound at 10:34 am on October 27, 2010.  Since we waited to find out if Tay was a boy or a girl Grandma Nicky said “well what is it?” and the midwife said, “I didn’t even look!!”  Another nurse came out after that and told them all it was a boy and mommy was doing just fine.
I was brought out of anesthesia about an hour later and as they wheeled me to recovery I heard them tell me I had a son, and my heart leaped that he was here and safe.  I asked where my husband was and they told me he was upstairs with my baby boy.  I went to sleep after that and woke up another hour later in recovery.  At 1:00 pm they brought me up to our room where Gus handed me my son and I had the most amazing tears of joy stream down my face.  After the most exciting 9 months and the scariest 24 hours I have ever lived thru I met my son, Taylor Lombardo.

Day 23-Favorite vacation

I love to travel and all my vacations are memorable but I think one of the top vacations would have to be Mammoth 2009 and learning to snowboard with my Hubby!

March 29, 2011

Day 22-Favorite city

I am absolutely in LOVE with Lucerne Switzerland.  When I came home from Europe the 1st thing I told mom was "I'm moving to Switzerland."  Well as you can guess that didn't happen but I would still love to live there, and thankfully so would Gus!

Sea World

Taylor and I packed up the car Friday night and headed to San Diego to hang out with James and Dindy! Thursday we got the call that they were driving out for the weekend for Dindy’s birthday and they wanted us to come play. Saturday morning we got up and headed to Sea World for a beautiful day with the fishies. Tay slept about 20 minutes of his normal long naps but he was just delightful all day. He loved being outside and seeing all the beautiful colors in the shows. His little face lit up and he giggled so hard every time he saw Ryle, they are gonna be the best of friends. Gus had snowboarding plans so he stayed behind and hit the snow with the guys, he had a great time but he was missed. I can’t wait to go back this summer with my boys!

Can you tell he was tired on the way home?!?!?!

G Phi B Flashback

I have a huge anniversary luncheon coming up this weekend for GPhiB and they asked for pics for the slideshow so last week I got all dusty and found my old college boxes and dug out a TON of pictures. After scanning about 50 I realized what a huge project it is gonna be to get all my old pics scanned, but I know it will be worth it. Here's a small collection for you to enjoy! I can't believe it's been 10 years since I graduated, wow has time flown by!

Day 19-Something you miss

I really miss being able to travel with ONE BAG as a carry on!  Gus and I used to be alble to throw all our stuff in one bag, hop on a plane and go!  Now its 3-4 bags, check the luggage and on and on and on.  One day we will be back to one bag!

March 25, 2011

Day 18-Something you regret

It’s really hard for me to think of past mistakes or transgressions as regrets. I have been through a lot in my life and not all of them are the smartest decisions but I can’t say that I regret all of them. Of course in those “freedom” years there are some people and decisions that I would prefer to not have happened and I will never mention them here, but for the most part I believe every person and situation, was put in my path to lead me right where I am today. Even though I made some "not smart" decisions with past people I don’t doubt one bit that those relationships shaped the person I am today. If you know me and my past you know I have traveled a long broken road and I can’t say that I regret that because it lead me right here, and I love it here. God certainly protected me along the way and I know it was all a part of His plan, even when I veered off the road on my own, He was looking at the map and leading me to bigger and better things.

It’s all about perspective- for example
  • Dated Brad for 6 years, he smothered me and didn’t want me to have friends,
  • I rebelled and joined sorority (insert long Brad story here)
  • Through Gamma Phi I met Scott,
  • Dated Scott who introduced me to Tyler after college,
  • Dated Tyler who introduced me to his little sister Tammy who was in high school,
  • Tammy encouraged me to sub at her high school WCHS,
  • WCHS offered me a full time position teaching the following year,
  • Teaching fulltime I had Missy as a student,
  • Missy introduced me to her mom Betty,
  • When I decided to leave teaching (with no plans on where I was going or what I was gonna do) Missy told her mom,
  • Betty approached me one day and asked if I would like to come work for her, I said “what’s the job” she said “what can you do?”
Hired! And 4 years later I have an amazing job, great benefits and I get to bring Tay to work with me every day!

Even though Brad was abusive and Scott was 3 years of fighting, and those relationships ended with lots of heartache, I still think if not for them I would not be here today.

I have tons of little transitions in my life where it hurt a lot while it was happening but now that I look back I can see God’s handy work! I believe every decision –good, bad, or ugly – has made me the woman, wife, mother, daughter and friend I am today, how could I ever think of them as regrets?

Day 17-Something you're looking forward to

Summer, can't wait to hit the pool with Taylor!

March 23, 2011

The Big Boy Car Seat

Taylor is so tall he outgrew his infant car seat already!  Last night Daddy brought home his new big boy seat – a gift from Auntie Maiza – and this morning we got him all set up!  He loved it and smiled so big at the extra room he had.  I love my little darling!

Day 16-Dream house

Dream house- well it’s a dream right? I would love anything with a huge wraparound porch with comfy chairs out front, a huge yard, a pool and spa, and a giant kitchen for entertaining. I would love to sit on the porch after a long day and watch the kids play in the yard while I read. Not too big, just enough space for the kiddos to have their own rooms but not feel like they are a mile away from us. An office, a media room, and a hidden room behind a large bookcase for all the stuff that piles up in random places, I can just throw it there till I have the chance to stow it away properly [don’t judge me you know it happens, you should see my current office, what a junk room!] My dream house is anywhere I can call home that is in a good neighborhood where we can ride bikes everywhere - o and near the beach for me and the snow for Gus!

Wouldn’t you love to join me for a glass of wine here….

Van's 4th Birthday!

I can’t believe our little Van Man is 4!  Mike and April had a race car party this past weekend to celebrate the little man.  Great food, delicious desserts, and fun times with the family!  Taylor had a wonderful time with all his cousins, especially Kalea, they chatted with each other for almost 20 minutes, it was adorable!

Mike works for So-Cal Speed Shop and he brought home this roadster to drive Van around for his birthday.  They loaded up Van's booster seat and took off on Friday, he was squealing with excitement and reaching up as far as he could to see over the dash.  It was parked in the garage Saturday so we had to take some fun photos with Taylor in it, if you look closely Tay is wearing his So-Cal onsie, we were representing!

Day 15-Bible verse

Romans 12:1-2

NIV
1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

I also really like The Message translation~
1-2 So here's what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don't become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You'll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.

Day 14-A picture you love

Meeting my son for the first time, such tears of joy!

Day 13-Goals

I have a lot of small goals-

Buy a new computer, a new camera, a new fridge

One huge goal –

Buy a house and decorate

And those personal goals –

Be a good wife and mother, work hard, take pride in what I have worked for, stop worrying about what others think of me, be a good friend, speak with kindness at all times, have more children!

Day 12-What you believe

It's quite simple: I believe in God, I believe Jesus is his son and was sent here to die for my sins, I believe in faith, hope and love.

March 18, 2011

Day 11-Favorite TV shows

The DVR is the best thing ever invented!!!

March 17, 2011

Day 10-Something you're afraid of

Failure ~ this fear seeps into many areas of my life, family, work, friendships, and so on.  I think it’s why I strive to be accurate all the time; I don’t want to fail when someone asks me something, anything.  I try to let myself relax a bit about this when I can because I know I learn from failure, but I tend learn those lessons the hard way.

Happy St. Patty's Day!

Our Growing Boy

In the last 2 weeks we have had lots of firsts for Taylor; going in the jumper, riding in his big boy stroller, a trip to Ca Adventure, his teeth popping thru and a case of pink eye!  He is so happy to be facing forward in the stroller now, and he loves the jumper.  As soon as he gets up from a nap he looks right at his jumper and goes “ahh”… Baby talk for “put me in there!” He hasn’t figured out the jumping yet, he just loves to stand and flip the frog. We spent a fun afternoon with W2 at Ca Adventure, minus 1 meltdown with a noisy roller coaster overhead, Tay did really well. It was fun to get out for a beautiful afternoon and enjoy people watching!  Tay cut his 2 bottom front teeth Monday with some ease, just lots of drool.  And yes, pink eye! I caught it within 15 minutes of it starting and I called Kaiser for an appointment at the offices right next door to my office and had him at the doctor 10 minutes after that with meds in hand . I was so thankful that I could walk over to his doctor and get him seen in minutes, thank you Kaiser! It was a really light case and I caught it early so he wasn’t in too much pain. I am so lucky that he is at work with me and I was able to grab him and go get it taken care of right away!

Best Friends

Day 9-A picture of your friends

I am so blessed by these people in my life, and there is no way I could pick ONE pic, so there are 20!!!  Thank you so much to these amazing people who have stood by me through the good, the bad, and the ugly and come through on the other side with loving arms.  You have held me up through some really tough times, and I know I can call on each and every one of you when I am in need.  Thank you for making me laugh, sometimes making me cry, and making me a better person all around.  I cherish each and every memory I have made with my friends, and I am excited for many many more to come!

A friend is one who knows us,
but loves us anyway.

Day 5-Your siblings

Siblings- wow why can’t I articulate what I need to say here? I can give you the stats, I have 2 brothers and 1 sister, 3 sister in laws and 2 brother in laws. They are all my “brothers and sisters” to me and I can’t deny the love I have for my siblings no matter how/when they came into my life! I couldn’t choose just one or 2 pics so there are a lot! I could write another novel here but I will keep it concise and just give ya’ll a rundown!

James- he is my oldest brother, well he is really my ½ brother but I have never liked that label, he is my brother. We are 7 years apart and he was raised with us until he moved to AZ after high school and still lives there today. He is married to Dindy and together they have 5 kids and 1 grandkid. He is wicked smart especially when it comes to mechanics, and machinery. He is a self made man, successful in life and in love.

Christy- she is my ½ sister but once again with the labels- she’s my sister, we are 4 years apart. She moved to AZ when James did when she graduated 8th grade. She is married to Joe and together they have 4 kids and 6 grandkids! She has the most loving and giving heart and she is a wonderful mother. I don’t get to chat with her as often as I like but when we do its for hours and hours. She has the most amazing heart and she loves with all her being.

Ray – what can I say? Ray and I are 2 years apart exactly. Our birth dates are 5 days apart so we had lots of celebrations together. We were not so close as children but when we hit high school our sibling relationship became a friendship. I think he just liked dating my friends and I liked dating his hahaha! He has always been there as a protector and I know he will continue to do so for the rest of our lives. He is an amazing salesman; he is street smart and a great father. He lives in Brea with his wife Christi and their 2 kids. I get to see him a lot and really enjoy our friendship.

Miaza and Mike – Maiza is Gus’ sister and together with Mike they have 4 children. They also live in AZ, we get to kill a lot of birds with 1 stone when we make a trip out there! They both have been amazing in inviting me into their lives as a sister, friend and Auntie! I am so blessed to have them in my life!

March 11, 2011

Day 4-Your parents

I have been truly blessed with my parents and an amazing mother in law as well. As I begin to write this post I know it can be pages and pages long but I am not writing a novel here, although I know I could.

My Mother-In-Law ~ Silvia Lombardo
She is a wonderful mother to my husband and an amazing grandmother to Taylor. She wants to teach him Spanish and comes to visit him as often as she can. She was named Grandma Nicky by Gus’ nieces and nephews because her dog is named Nicky and that was the easiest way to differentiate her from the other grandparents. She will always be grandma Nicky to our kids too! I am so glad I can call her and she will be there for our family at the drop of a hat and she loves to spoil Taylor. She is an amazing cook; she makes delicious empanadas, pasta, chicken and so on. She is a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend.  Thank you for loving me as a daughter Silvia, I love you!

My Parents
They have been married for 35 years and together they have 4 children. They were both married once before they married each other and my dad brought 2 wonderful kids, James and Christy along with him. They had 2 together, my brother Ray and then lastly me to complete our family of 6. My mom always said she would have had 12 kids if she could have, I’m thankful that didn’t pan out hahaha! Together they have 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. I have learned so much from them, how to be a daughter, friend, wife and mother, how to laugh, forgive and love.  Even though they live over 2 hours away they still come up on the weekends to see the grandkids, I only wish they were closer so I could see them all the time again.  They introduced me to Jesus and instilled a love in me that I strive to grow and pass on to my family. I only hope my marriage is as successful and filled with love as theirs is!

My Mom ~ Sharon Lynn Shafer Martinez
She is truly one of my best friends, you know in the face of a crisis the 1st person that comes to your mind to call? She is it, I call her for everything. She is smart, loving, logical and an amazing listener. I can tell her anything and I do! I think we talk, email, text or FB every day. She is very organized, clean, fun and loves adventures. She is my roller coaster buddy, not scared of anything. We really want to go sky diving together and we have been saying for years now that we want to do the Amazing Race, we would totally win! My favorite story to tell about my mom is the time she took my Uncle’s sand rail over a 50 foot cliff, we were driving behind her and then poof, she was gone. I think the 1st thing outta her mouth after that was - let’s do that again! She was there all night while I was in labor and was the one I could lean on while awaiting the arrival of Taylor. She was supposed to be in the room when he was born but as you may know none of us were “there” for that. She did help light a fire under the midwives butt to get him out when his heart slowed to almost a stop and I am thankful every day that she was there fighting for me and Tay. She moved in with us for a week after he arrived and I cried so hard after she left. Not because I was alone, or because I was a new mother, I cried because I was going to miss her and spending everyday with her. I can’t wait till we have another child and she comes back again. I’m crying now as I write this so that’s about all I can get thru, I love you mom!

My Dad ~ Raymond Martinez Sr.
My dad thinks he is a comedian. He loves to laugh and make people laugh in turn. He is an AMAZING singer and when I was little he sang at several churches around SoCal and I used to sit in the front pew and sing along with him. He still sings in church today and I love to see him when he has a solo performance. I had the pleasure of working with my dad for 2 years, and I loved our lunch dates. I miss being able to walk down the hallway to his office for any reason whatsoever. I can call him for anything and I do! He likes sports, I wouldn’t say a fanatic like my little family but he does like to watch. Since moving to SD they are Chargers and Padres fans and I love going to games with them. Can’t wait for some this season! My dad is deathly afraid of heights- sorry dad had to share – hence why mom and I haven’t gone sky diving yet. We love to watch Sneakers, Hudson Hawk, Murder by Death, and a few other old movies and laugh together. When I hear a certain phrase I tend to break out in song, any song containing that phrase, and I totally got that from him. He is a great cook, whenever we go to SD he makes us yummy food and delights in our pancake breakfasts together. He is a wonderful grandpa and does “Tick-Tock” with all the kiddos. When Tay was born he said to me “I can’t wait to do Tick Tock with him” and it made me cry.  I could have never asked for a better father, I love you Dad!

March 10, 2011

Day 3-Your first love

Chocolate Chip Cookies – yep can’t deny it and neither can my waist line!!! I have been in love with these little devils since I was a little girl. Even today nothing cures my bad days like a trip to Mrs. Fields for a CC cookie with walnuts to make me smile.

Day 2-Meaning behind your blog name

When I first thought about doing the blog I really considered my audience.  It was 2009 and there wasn’t many fun things going on to announce to the world at the time.  Work, husband, family, gym, friends, repeat.  I struggled for about a month and decided to go for it.  I knew that within 6 months Gus and I were about to start on the greatest adventure of your lives so starting to journal at the beginning seemed appropriate.  The most exciting thing we had going on was our 2 baby kittens Michaela and Jordan who were 6 months old at the time.  If you look back a lot of posts are about them, PT~ Pre Taylor hahaha.  When naming my blog I wanted something that I wouldn’t regret later, something that represented us and wasn’t cryptic at the same time.  I am not good at slogans or anything so I went with the obvious with a twist.  At first I considered using Tails, but thought that later on that wouldn’t fully encompass "us" when the posts about the cats became less and less.  So I went with Tale and I love this definition  of “Tale” ~ A story that narrates strange happenings in a direct manner, without detailed descriptions of character.  It makes me laugh and I thought it defined our life and the purpose of the blog perfectly, so we became Lombardo Family Tales!

March 8, 2011

Day 1-Introduce, recent picture, 15 interesting facts

I think I can sum up my introduction and facts all together, most are already posted in my "about me" section, I revamped and updated a bit but some are worth repeating ~ I narrowed down to 15 and elaborated on some...

I:
  1. believe in God,
  2. am in love with my husband Gus,
  3. love being a wife and mother,
  4. am amazed at the life we created in Taylor, and I am truely blessed to be able to have him with me every day as well as get my job done!
  5. have learned to live and let live,
  6. love being a friend,
  7. speak the truth in love,
  8. have been a Dallas Cowboys fan since I was 6,
  9. have no sense of balance, Gus has an amazing sense of balance so we are hoping that Taylor lands on his end of the spectrum and not mine there,
  10. both my cats sleep on me and in a queen sized bed with hubby that makes little room for me - and I LOVE it,
  11. I have this strange obsession with numbers - I count everything, stairs, steps to the fridge from the coffee maker, how many times I stir something in a bowl, the seconds clicking away till I can play with Taylor after a nap, I even have to have the volume on the tv counter on mutiples of 5, 25 not 27, 30 not 34 and so on.  I thot I was a little weird until my Dad told me he does the same exact thing, apple didn't fall far from the tree.
  12. like paying bills, I have these really fun spreadsheets that are color coded, I know I'm weird!
  13. have my own DVR for my random shows and to watch them I have to be on the treadmill, lately there are a ton piling up since I don't have too much time to get on there, I think I have about 30 Law and Orders on there....one day
  14. hate doing my hair, don't get me wrong I love my hair and I do it every day, but I hate taking the time to do it.
  15. hate bananas but love banana pudding,  it's a texture thing.

March 7, 2011

My Swaddle Bug

Taylor absolutely loves to be swaddled. The second you wrap him tight and give him his paci he turns his head as far as he can to the left and conks out. It's the cutest thing ever and I love that he goes down in 2 seconds like this but the problem is as soon as he can break loose he wakes himself up. This leads to Daddy getting up more than once to give him his paci until I trot in there and reswaddle him and he's out again. We have been trying to break him of the swaddle habit and most naps he does pretty well, but we still swaddle him at night so he can sleep thru. Can't deny what works right?

One way to get him to sleep with his arms loose is to keep his hands occupied without distracting him. So I put 1 paci in his mouth and he took it out with his hand, so I stuck another in his mouth and he took it out with his other hand, so I stuck a 3rd in his mouth and he was satisfied and went right to sleep. I had to take pics to show Daddy!

Today at work I put Tay down at 1:15 ( a little early) swaddled and we sat around the lunch table and listened to him giggle and talk for 30 minutes. This being highly unlike my child I went in to his room and low and behold this is what I found....

My child the escape artist.
He broke out of his swaddle, scooted up to the top of the pack n play and turned sideways. This being a 1st I was laughing so hard I had to take a picture of him. He is just so cute!  ~and yes the bumpers are now out of the PnP since he tore them apart...safety 1st!

4 Month Appointment

This smile didn't last too long! Taylor had his 4 month appointment last week and he weighed in at 16 lbs 5 oz, what a chunk! He had a huge growth spurt, so much that they had to measure him 2 times because they thot the numbers were off. He is very tall for his age ~ hmmm wonder where he gets that from?!?!?!?! He got his 3 shots and screamed so loud and had his little shriek that said "why are you doing this to me?" I almost cried because his little whimpers made me think that his feelings were so hurt that I took him there to get shots. Kaiser was so kind to let me have the room after and nurse him for 20 minutes to help keep him on schedule and help calm him a bit. We changed Dr's offices since our last appointment and I LOVE his new Dr. She was so excited to meet him and loves his sweet smile. She said he is cutting teeth and by his next appointment he will have a couple coming thru. I can't believe my baby boy is growing so fast! I love seeing him learn new things everyday and watching him grow, I swear he grows every time I get him up from a nap!
